But I had a few places I liked. The Stinking Rose in North Beach was a favorite; and there was a bar across the street...there were no windows on the sidewalk; just open holes. They'd pull down a set of rolltop doors when they were closed; when open, you could sit by the windowsill, and just watch the freakshow.

Inevitably I'd wind up drunk when there - smooth drinks, good draft beer...
Could it have been the Stinking Rose?

Back in ancient times the annual Italian Heritage Parade was called the Columbus Day Parade. The name changed in 1994. First parade I marched in as a high school freshman.

I don't think so. I have memories of seeing the sign for The Stinking Rose on the other side of the street, while drinking there.

Of course, I was drinking - and that was a long time ago. Twenty-five years, to be exact...almost to the day.

For anyone that doesn't know, the Stinking Rose is GARLIC!

There is a Garlic Festival in Gilroy CA every year and everything, including ice cream is made with garlic. For 2 weeks after, everyone knows you went to the garlic festival.

Hey! My brother remembered the restaurant! Capp's Corner! It was AWESOME! I'd forgotten about the lamb shanks, too. And now Capp's is closed forever. Pictures in link.

SF is unique in California in that it is both a city and a county with the same boundary (to the south, having water on the three other sides). I wasn't around in the 1800s when this was set up, so I don't know why.
