    Newswise — WASHINGTON -- The percentage of young Americans experiencing certain types of mental health disorders has risen significantly over the past decade, with no corresponding increase in older adults, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
    “More U.S. adolescents and young adults in the late 2010s, versus the mid-2000s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression or suicidal thoughts, and more attempted suicide,” said lead author Jean Twenge, PhD, author of the book "iGen" and professor of psychology at San Diego State University. “These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across all ages.”
    The research was published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.
    Twenge and her co-authors analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a nationally representative survey that has tracked drug and alcohol use, mental health and other health-related issues in individuals age 12 and over in the United States since 1971. They looked at survey responses from more than 200,000 adolescents age 12 to 17 from 2005 to 2017, and almost 400,000 adults age 18 and over from 2008 to 2017.
    The rate of individuals reporting symptoms consistent with major depression in the last 12 months increased 52 percent in adolescents from 2005 to 2017 (from 8.7 percent to 13.2 percent) and 63 percent in young adults age 18 to 25 from 2009 to 2017 (from 8.1 percent to 13.2 percent). There was also a 71 percent increase in young adults experiencing serious psychological distress in the previous 30 days from 2008 to 2017 (from 7.7 percent to 13.1 percent). The rate of young adults with suicidal thoughts or other suicide-related outcomes increased 47 percent from 2008 to 2017 (from 7.0 percent to 10.3 percent).
    There was no significant increase in the percentage of older adults experiencing depression or psychological distress during corresponding time periods. The researchers even saw a slight decline in psychological distress in individuals over 65.
    “Cultural trends in the last 10 years may have had a larger effect on mood disorders and suicide-related outcomes among younger generations compared with older generations,” said Twenge, who believes this trend may be partially due to increased use of electronic communication and digital media, which may have changed modes of social interaction enough to affect mood disorders. She also noted research shows that young people are not sleeping as much as they did in previous generations.
    The increase in digital media use may have had a bigger impact on teens and young adults because older adults' social lives are more stable and might have changed less than teens' social lives have in the last ten years, said Twenge. Older adults might also be less likely to use digital media in a way that interferes with sleep – for example, they might be better at not staying up late on their phones or using them in the middle of the night.
    “These results suggest a need for more research to understand how digital communication versus face-to-face social interaction influences mood disorders and suicide-related outcomes and to develop specialized interventions for younger age groups,” she said.
    Given that the increase in mental health issues was sharpest after 2011, Twenge believes it’s unlikely to be due to genetics or economic woes and more likely to be due to sudden cultural changes, such as shifts in how teens and young adults spend their time outside of work and school. If so, that may be good news, she said.
    “Young people can't change their genetics or the economic situation of the country, but they can choose how they spend their leisure time. First and most important is to get enough sleep. Make sure your device use doesn't interfere with sleep -- don't keep phones or tablets in the bedroom at night, and put devices down within an hour of bedtime,” she said. “Overall, make sure digital media use doesn't interfere with activities more beneficial to mental health such as face-to-face social interaction, exercise and sleep.”

    This goes to one of the basic fundamentals. The leftists have attacked the foundation of society for decades. Ripping apart families in nearly every way. And they have tried to put into place of the family, government or media or ideologies that do not offer support, end up being completely against the interest of children & actually harm them in multiple ways.

    I'll add my 2 cents ...

    Kids today seem to be more isolated and self-involved. I say that knowing that their online circle of "friends" can be huge and much greater that us oldsters had. Their online presence, however, disconnects them from reality. Coupled with that, the public indoctrination system also isolates them from reality, or worse, distorts reality in an political way. TV and celebrity culture reinforce the fantasy. If their self-worth depends on how many likes or thanks they get, they are in trouble.

    Sending and receiving text messages is without emotion and inflection. Smileys might bridge some of the gap, but it's not the same as face to face interaction. Kids today don't socialize face to face as much. Much of the communication is selfies, pics of food, and of course, cats. The cuteness of stupid apps that put animal features on their faces, compared to their natural self, and they are not so cute anymore. Their online persona, and real persona, are different and in conflict.

    As they start to get out on their own, first jobs, first car, first love, etc. reality hits them hard in the face. Everything they learned in school and online is suddenly in question. They don't have a toolbox with coping skills. All of the sudden, they are no longer special, and performance matters, not everyone gets an A or a pass.

    Church attendance is falling. It's not about "religion", but about the kids gaining an awareness of life being much larger than their self, that they answer to a higher power. I really don't care what "religion" is in play, it is the sense of how their actions affect others in society. If they did community service in lieu of church, it might help, but their self-centered lifestyle makes this less likely.

    And, possibly most important ... with single parent families, and dual parent families that are disconnected from their kids, the youth of today lack the proper guidance they need to cope with the reality that hits them head on. They don't have all the examples they need. And parents are not there to recognize that something is not right.

    In our school district, almost half of the students were living with grandparents. That's scary. Grandparents are stepping up where parents don't, but the age difference between grandparents and grandkids makes "relating to" more difficult. Kids are feeling abandoned by parents, even if they have good relations with grandparents.

    Add it all up, and a higher percentage of young people decide to check out early.

    Today's youth are intentionally being taught conflicting information by the media and teachers. Information that the young instinctively know cannot be true, but have no source to prove it to themselves.

    I'm not doubting or disagreeing with the OP, but I'm wondering if there could also be economic factors at play.
    Teens and young adults were really hard hit during the Recession. In California immigrants took most of the less skilled jobs young people traditionally used to do, while the cost of renting apartments skyrocketed, young people being unable to afford going off on their own. In other more rural parts of the country people had also been hard hit, and it's always the young that are hit first, because they don't have a foot on the career ladder yet. There was a lot of pressure on young people to go to college, even those that were not really cut out for it. All that student loan debt and then being stuck in a minimum wage job would be enough to make anyone feel a little suicidal.

    Same way with their brain. Seriously. It hurts to think. But the more you are required to think, to determine how to do something, to learn something...it gets easier and easier. It's like the brain is a muscle too.
