    Malibu Wildfire 2018, California

I don't see a thread on this yet but I've been following this fire for much of the day. It's amazing how fast it's spread and terrifying what it's become. It started in a campground this morning about 6AM or so Pacific Time. I suppose it's about 12:40 on the west coast so in 6 hours it's burned over 8 miles, forced over 29K people to evacuate; including whole cities and essential infrastructure commodities like hospitals. It's burning an estimated 80 square miles a minute (that's six football fields a minute). The videos coming out are crazy.

It's Kalifornistan so I guess were going to have to ban fire.

This is live coverage. Not a news agency. Just an observer who watches these sort of things.

So, there's 70 people trapped in a Walgreens now in the fire path apparently. They're in defensive ops trying to rescue those folks.

I've never actually listened to live fire coverage before. I wonder if this is a common rescue scenario. @gamewell45 are you around? Do you know?

The Camp Fire has scorched almost 8 square miles in Butte County, which is about 90 miles north of Sacramento, according to Cal Fire. It was not immediately known whether there were injuries or deaths.

The fire is burning about 80 acres per minute, according to UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain. That's equal to about 60 football fields per minute.
Butte County is toward the northeastern end of the Central valley, partly valley, partly in the Sierra foothills. Butte County is not heavily populated (less than 250K). Right now is toward the end of the dry season, so lots of dry grasses, brush, and stuff like leaves and acorns (= fuel). If it's a somewhat remote area, it's going to be hard to control.

We can see the smoke from our backyard here in northern Nevada. Fortunately it hasn't arrived here like it usually does. This is really getting to be horrible for about the past 5 years now.

Videos on FB. You don't have to log in to see them. These are the sort I can't find on Youtube right now. Folks driving through and posting neighborhoods on fire.

It's definitely a common rescue scenario although normally it would be an offensive ops attacking the fire and pushing it back in order to reach the trapped people.

Wildfire are tough to fight because they can be so unpredictable and can literally change direction as the wind blows. Plus it looks like there's a lot of pine which burns fast and furious.

This is the first I'm hearing of this; i'll have to find out more before I can comment more on the tactical operations.
