example of re-use of genetic information: clathrin

Here is a very simple example of the re-use of genetic information. There is a protein called clathrin, which is ubiquitous in nature. It is responsible for the structural stability of "vesicles". Vesicles are little sacs of membrane that contain molecules being either imported to the cell or exported from the cell. An example of import would be the feeding behavior of amoebas, and example of export would be a neurotransmitter in the human brain. Vesicles are necessary for endocytosis and exocytosis. The clathrin protein forms a (polyhedral) "lattice" around the vesicle, to keep it round and to keep it from deforming and to keep it from squishing its contents.

But all this changes during cell division. When the cell divides, clathrin no longer operates on the cell membrane. Instead, it operates on the mitotic spindle. It binds tubulin to maintain the spindle shape and stabilize the asters.

Genetic information is constantly reused, been done millions of times.

    Here is a deeper example.

This mechanism covers fully one-third of the neurotransmitters in the human brain.
