House Pulls Plug on Sandy Aid Bill (http://politi.co/TFXE5Q)

So, let me get this straight...we can vote to increase everyone's taxes and add $4 trillion to the deficit (http://politi.co/WcXXTV) just to score partisan points, but we just can't afford to aid the victims of superstorm Sandy and get much-needed jobs and care for our veterans (http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/19/veterans-jobs-bill-blocked-in-the-senate/)?

Is that about right?

Why would you care for victims of a hurricane or veterans when you need that money to buy allegiance in the middle east? You yanks!

AND we're generous to a fault with MUSLIMS for cryinoutloud. We have a death wish of sorts. Buying allegiance in the middle east is in the purview of dimocrats. Ask them. It sure isn't working.

Exactly why do the rest of us owe billions to people who build in places where they've been told were going to blow away for years?

Would people rebuild in these places if they knew that no one was going to subsidize them for doing so?

Do you ever recognize that Republicans are not perfect? Both parties are hugely imperfect. I've heard several times that the relief bill is loaded down with (unrelated) pork. Both parties need to get a targeted bill out that helps the victims and ONLY the victims.

Meanwhile the victims wait and learn how slow and unhelpful bureaucracy can be. Sad, really.

This is (no offense) the dumbest complaint about this whole thing I've heard. There is not a single place you can go anywhere in the world where you are safe from natural disasters. They are NATURAL DISASTERS. Stop this stupid blame the victim BS.

Clearly you don't know the difference between building in flood plains or on barrier islands, which is like asking to to be wiped out, and more usual natural disasters. What happened there has been predicted for many, many years. It was pretty much guaranteed. I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who knowingly build and reside in places that are guaranteed to have "natural" disasters. Building in these places isn't natural at all.

Take away that element and much of the damage is gone.

I'd say your not knowing this is pretty dumb.

I do know it, smartass. My point is that there is nowhere you can go in this country where you are not constantly at risk of your home being wiped out. The other thing is people have been living in those areas since this country's inception. That is the center of our economy. You're as insane as the gun confiscators if you think we can just pick up and move it all.

The fact is this wasn't a guarantee. It was a freak storm. You don't blame the fucking victims for some freak natural disaster they can't control.

"Conservatives have denounced some of the spending inserted into the $60 billion Hurricane Sandy relief bill that Speaker John Boehner stopped in the House over New Year’s. “They had the opportunity to have a $27 billion to $30 billion dollar legit relief package,” Republican Rep. Darrell Issa said on Fox News this week. But lawmakers “packed it with pork, then dared us not to vote on it. If we’re going to provide relief, we can’t allow it to be doubled with unrelated pork no matter where the relief is.”“Look at some of what was in the $60 billion bill,” the Wall Street Journal editorial page wrote Thursday (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323374504578219733538204830.html?m od=googlenews_wsj). “$150 million for Alaskan fisheries; $2 million for roof repair at the Smithsonian in Washington; and about $17 billion for liberal activists under the guise of ‘community development’ funds and so-called social service grants.” The Sandy relief bill, the Journal concluded, “has become cover for Congress to revive earmarks and the pork machine.”
http://washingtonexaminer.com/message-from-alaska-our-disaster-relief-isnt-pork/article/2517643#.UOgSym_Ac09

Once a bill has been properly submitted for a vote then I believe it can't be amended. The vote is up or down. Republicans could submit another bill. Oh, wait, they did that, didn't they.

"Washington (CNN) -- Congress approved a $9.7 billion Superstorm Sandy aid package on Friday following delays over fiscal cliff bickering, warnings of dwindling federal funds and swirling controversy over millions of dollars for unrelated projects. The measure passed the House, 354-67. The Senate did so unanimously and without debate."
http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/04/politics/house-sandy-bill-vote/index.html

The Pork Bill passed by the Senate?

""There is no time to waste," Reid said. Both chambers have to agreed on a package by January 2, when the current term of Congress is expected to end, or restart the process of crafting legislation in 2013. The Senate approved the bill 62-32, with most Republicans voting no. "We beat back all of the crippling amendments," said Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat fromNew York, which suffered the largest monetary damage in the storm."
http://news.yahoo.com/senate-approves-60-4-billion-superstorm-sandy-reconstruction-000707603.html

Have you ever noticed that when the leftists want to screw us we hear, "there is no time to waste," or "this has to be done right now," or "the deal on this used car will only be good if you sign it right now before my boss gets back from lunch." I can remember asking myself why Obamacare had to be passed before a single person voting on it had actually read it.

And those "crippling amendments" were the ones to reduce pork but the brave socialists managed to fight them off so they could borrow and spend and borrow and spend and borrow and spend. Poor babies don't know anything else to do.

Warning. Any time someone wants you money and says it has to be right this minute, you're dealing with a con man.

In all honesty, I don't really give a damn about the pork at the present. We're already going down the tube without much hope of recovery until 2015-2016, and there are people that are still in desperate need of help. Those people are my top priority, not the idiot Democrats that think more pork is a good thing.

But since you asked, my point is that the Republicans didn't even try to take the pork out of that bill. They just shelved it. Now they passed a bill without (I assume) pork, so good on them. They get some respect points back. But for that specific bill, they killed it without any attempts at removing the pork.

If there's pork and you don't want pork, remove the pork. Don't just kill the bill.

But for that specific bill, they killed it without any attempts at removing the pork.

Their job was to vote on this bill. Funny how your anger is not directed at the democrats in the Senate who drafted the bill with the pork in the first place. Now the house will present their own bill minus the pork....that's how it works. So, you are not angered by the democrats and the pork, you are angered that they will get no credit for the bill, right? You are upset that the republicans passed some other bill instead of removing all pork from the senate bill? And this makes sense to you?
