I thought this was going to be a thread about the New NYC mayor.

And THIS Glam Rock band, circa 1973 and 1974, is one of the most critical in developing the punk sound after The Stooges. This is a really low-down, nasty sound that SO kicks major ass!!!--can't listen to enough New York Dolls!!!:

This could well be my own personal theme song...as far as I'm concerned, although it came out back in 1973, three years before the term 'Punk' began to be applied to the music, this is the FIRST FULLY REALIZED punk rock song; no long really 'pre-punk' or 'proto-punk' but FULL-ON PUNK!! Maybe even the GREATEST punk song ever written: there's a good reason Henry Rollins has 'Search and Destroy' tattooed across his upper back!

This is nothing short of GLORIOUS!!!!!!

After The Ramones the greatest American punk band from the classic period [76 to 80] has to be The Dead Boys.

This is their greatest song, a true punk anthem, and very frequently covered:

Hint about listening to Punk: Whenever available, always listen to the rough mixes of albums and songs. These are the rawest, grittiest, most truly and genuinely 'PUNK' versions of these songs. The above Dead Boys song was from a rough mix album, which I own, called 'Younger, Louder and Snottier' [the original album was called 'Young, Loud and Snotty'].

Punk should NEVER be slick, overproduced and flawless-sounding!

NO music should be, Ghost !

Y'all will have to pardon me for not posting in these genre threads ~

I'm honestly never sure where different songs "belong,"

though I like tunez from all of them.

It's either Rock, Pop, Trance, (new to me) Operatic, Classical or just "good."

Six "categories," and I still mess up! My bad.

NO music should be, @Ghost (http://thepoliticsforums.com/member.php?u=312) !

I'd make an exception for most progressive rock/progressive metal here, where detailed production can really be very effective. Bands like 'Yes' and 'Agalloch' [to pick two different genres and eras] sound better all cleaned up and polished, but they're superb musicians in both bands anyway.

Johnny Thunders of The New York Dolls--before he sank into a life of heroin addiction, which eventually killed him--started a punk band of his own called 'Johnny Thunders and the and the Heartbreakers'.

They put out an album called 'L.A.M.F.' in '77, a SUPERB American punk album, especially valuable in its 'The Lost '77 Mixes' version, VERY MUCH worth owning!

You might be thinking: 'How does this guy know so much about punk rock?'

Well, apart from listening to it since the late 70s, almost all of my information comes from an absolutely ESSENTIAL book called 'Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk', by 'Legs' McNeil and Gillian McCAin. Required reading for ANYONE interested in the 1970s and its music and culture that has NOTHING to do with Disco!

Was my favorite genre for a while, but it is sort of limited. Just depends on what suits you I guess, Cramps and a few similar groups would be considered original/pure psychobilly, but there are some variations on that original style.

I'd say to check out the Matadors if you like rockabilly at all, they have some great albums. Old Nekromantix is good, old Tiger Army, Mad Sin, the Sharks, frantic flintstones.

Oh and The Creepshow's first album before the lead singer got pregnant from the lead of the Matadors. Love this girl. Her little sister took over and it's not the same.

Warning weakest & country sounding song but best to see her appeal.

The big double-bass would seem to indicate a rockabilly influence.

Are they psychobilly also?

Yep, psychobilly with more of a punk/metal edge than the original psychobillies. Less rockabilly influence, more hardcore. Funny lyrics. Bad half-Elvis half-Danzig impersonation.

Chainsaw running in the dead of the night
I'm cutting up some bodies
A dinner delight
I hit them with a hammer, watch them die
It's chainsaw massacre time tonight

Where you gonna run to
Where you gonna hide
You're hanging from a hook, I'll skin you alive
And are you gonna scream for me as I watch you die?

Finger licking good, baby give me some skin
Tear it off your arm
I might let you live
I feast upon the body for it isn't a sin
Open up the oven now and put yourself in

Where you gonna run to
Where you gonna hide
You're hanging from a hook, I'll skin you alive
And are you gonna scream for me as I watch you die?

I break your back
I pull out your spine
I'm ripping off your fingernails two at a time
I'm chewing on your ears wile you're alive
Gonna get me fresh meat tonight

I'm an old school NYC traditional skinhead (non racist), from the mid 80's. I grew up a couple blocks from CBGB. I used to own the pit. ;)
